FRIDAY ON STRANGE LOVE
UPDATE BY S.S.S
Akash arrives at Bua-ji’s house alone and tries to get Payal’s attention from the road. She doesn’t look up. He decides to put the first of NK’s plans into action by throwing a rock through Payal’s window, but it hits Bua-ji instead. Akash ends up hiding amongst the plants near the verandah as Bua-ji angrily looks for the culprit. Payal, saying that it must have been some mischievous children, closes her bedroom window while Akash laments,
“Issi liye bola tha Bhai ke saath aana tha.” [This is why I said I should have come with Bhai.]
Akash-bitwaa tries Arnav’s plan of simply knocking on the door. His courage fails him on his first attempt, so he breathes deeply and gives himself a pep-talk …
“Come on. Come on, Akash. It’s simple. Bhai ne kaise bola tha? It’s simple. Right, it’s simple. ” [Come on. Come on, Akash. It’s simple. How did Bhai explain it? It’s simple. Right, it’s simple.]
… but he still can’t make himself do it.
The sight of children playing with fireworks reminds Akash of NK’s other plan. His fireworks cause chaos inside the house (Bua-ji concludes it must have been a bomb-blast …), and Garima, Payal, and Bua-ji run outside to investigate. Akash reaches for Payal but doesn’t manage to get her attention, and runs inside the house while the three women are occupied.
Bua-ji fumes while Payal again tries to convince her that children must be responsible for the disturbances. When Garima notices that Khushi is missing, Payal explains that she’s distributing sweets to the neighbours to celebrate the new year. Akash, now hiding behind a curtain, tries to get Payal’s attention by tapping her on the shoulder and gets Bua-ji instead, which causes confusion.
Bua-ji, deciding to wait for Khushi to return, remembers that the leg on one of her dining chairs is loose.
I told Sanka Devi to do it. She always says ‘I’ll do it … I’ll do it, Bua-ji’, but she never does it, Nand Kishore.
She fixes the chair with wood-glue, with Akash still behind the curtain, and accidentally spills glue on the seat of another chair. She’s impressed when she tests her handiwork -
Oh wow, Nand Kishore. This glue is great. We’ll have to test it on Sanka Devi’s mouth.
Bua-ji then notices that the curtain isn’t covering the window and moves it, somehow completely missing the 6 and a half foot man standing right there. Akash freezes in fear, his life probably flashing before his eyes. Payal panics when she returns with Bua-ji’s tea and sees him, dropping the cup, and he uses the distraction to hide under the dining table while Bua-ji fusses over her niece.
Payal’s cough
Akash reaches out and grabs Payal’s hand as she stands next to the dining table, letting her know where he is, and Payal spends the next few minutes trying to convince Bua-ji that nothing is wrong. When Akash coughs under the table, Payal pretends that she has a sore throat. Bua-ji, concerned, offers to make Payal some tea.
When they’re alone, Payal asks Akash what he’s doing here, and he explains that she sounded sad on the phone earlier and he wanted to celebrate the new year with her. He apologises to her when she still looks concerned -
I’m sorry, Payal-ji … I don’t usually do things like this … I mean, I always listen to my elders … it’s just … they say everything’s fair in love.
Bua-ji returns with the ginger tea, which Payal sneaks under the table to Akash while Bua-ji gets sugar. He cutely tells her that it doesn’t taste good because she didn’t make it. When Bua-ji sits down to have her own tea, she steps on Akash’s hand under the table.
Noticing, Payal frantically urges Bua-ji to sleep and offers to wait for Khushi instead. When they’re alone, Payal rubs Akash’s hand to soothe it. He likes it, and she quickly turns her attention to his other hand when he lies that it was hurt as well.
Akash comes out from underneath the table and sits on a chair - the same chair that Bua-ji spilled glue on earlier.
Shyam’s plan
When Anjali fails to appear for their private dinner, Filthy!Shyam sends HP to look for her. He becomes worried when HP starts fiddling with the fairylights - afraid that he’ll notice that a live wire that goes into the pool - and yells at him. Anjali interrupts, explaining that she was talking to Mama and telling !Shyam that he shouldn’t be angry at HP.
They start dancing, with Shyam slowly and carefully manoeuvring her closer to the edge of the pool. They’re briefly interrupted by Mama, who asks Anjali for a phone number, but Shyam continues with his plan when they’re alone again. He takes Anjali right to the pool’s edge without her noticing.
Scene continue with Shyam maneuvers Anjali to the edge of the pool while dancing with her, dipping her so she loses her balance. But Mama saves her, seconds from disaster, and then points out the live wire in the water. Shyam puts on a sickening act about how much he cares about his wife.
Meanwhile, Akash and Payal sit at Bua-ji’s dining table, alone for what might be the first time since their wedding was fixed. When Payal nervously asks him why he’s here, Akash reveals he’s arranged a surprise for her. He holds out his hand and asks if she will accompany him outside, nullifying her protests about Khushi and Bua-ji before stopping her from leaving by holding her hand.
Akash lists the things he’s endured tonight just to meet her - hiding behind the curtain and then under the table, having his hand squashed by Bua-ji - and requests, again, that she accompany him. He interprets Payal’s silence as a refusal and releases her, but she surprises him by saying that she’s getting a shawl.
Akash-bitwaa is stuck
Elated, Akash quickly tells Payal she doesn’t need a shawl and offers his jacket. But when he tries to get up from the dining chair, he finds that he’s stuck. They realise that some glue must have spilled on the chair.
Akash’s struggles with the chair wake Bua-ji, so Payal hides him under blankets and pretends that she was airing them out when Bua-ji asks. Bua-ji beats at the blankets, commenting on how dusty they are (Akash yells out and Payal pretends to cough), but Payal has to intervene when Bua-ji brings out a wooden bat to help.
When Bua-ji finally returns to her room, Akash and Payal continue panicking about their predicament. At one point Akash even suggests that he simply take the chair home with him but Payal says no.
Deciding that Khushi would definitely know what to do, Payal tries to call her, only to discover that Khushi’s mobile is at home. After a few more unsuccessful attempts at extracting himself, Akash decides to call his Bhai while Payal paces anxiously.
Akash: Bhai, I … I’m a little stuck. I’m at Payal-ji’s house.
Arnav: Yeah, so? You wanted to be there at this time, didn’t you? At midnight –
Akash: Bhai, Bhai, I’m not stuck like that. I’m stuck to a chair.
It takes some time but Akash eventually manages to explain what’s happened, inciting an incredulous - “ What!? That’s ridiculous! Now what?” - from his elder brother.
At first, Arnav refuses to go to Bua-ji’s house, suggesting that they ask that Khushi Kumari Gupta for help - she always has lots of stupid ideas anyway - but he reluctantly agrees when Akash explains that Khushi isn’t home. Akash asks him to bring an extra pair of pants.
Meanwhile, NK arranges pillows on his bed so it looks he’s asleep before saying that he’s going to see Khushi-ji.
The Raizada brothers
Payal welcomes Arnav into the house when he arrives, and he stands there staring at Akash while Akash explains that he would never have called if Khushi-ji was home. Arnav is relieved -
“Thank God yahan pe nahi hai.” [Thank God (she’s) not here.]
First, he tries separating the chair from Akash by force (Payal has to turn around), but they’re unsuccessful and stumble into the table. All three of them freeze, looking towards the bedrooms, but no one wakes up. When Arnav suggests they try again, Payal protests that the noise might wake Bua-ji.
Arnav produces a solvent that will dissolve the glue and Payal retreats into her bedroom while the two brothers work. Smiling, Akash recalls when he spent a day stuck to his bed when glue was spilt on it in the summer holidays.
“Mujhe kyun bata rahe ho? Maine nahi kiya.” [Why are you telling me? I didn’t do it.]
Arnav denies knowing anything about it, but his smile when Akash can’t see reveals that he was behind it!
Arnav has forgotten the extra pair of pants that Akash asked him to bring, so he knocks on Payal’s door and asks for help. She offers to get a pair of her father’s pants, and when she leaves, Arnav bumps into a chair. Akash wears Shashi’s pants.
Akash: Bhai, how does it look?
Arnav: (looks down at Akash’s pants and then back up)
Arnav: (very dryly, somehow managing not to roll his eyes) You look very good.
Payal: Yes … It does look good.
He leaves Akash and Payal to decide what they’re doing after reminding them that they have to act quickly. When they’re alone, Payal tells Akash that she really can’t go with him. He recites all the things he’s had to endure today and urges her to reconsider, and she shyly agrees.
They find Arnav standing on the verandah, drenched in moonlight. Akash urges him to go home, explaining that his plans with Payal will take some time.
Realising he’s missing his phone and that it probably fell out of his pocket when he bumped into the chair in Payal’s room, Arnav sneaks back into the house. Seconds later, Khushi returns, complaining about Bua-ji’s carelessness when she notices that the front door is unlocked.
In the darkness of her bedroom, Khushi calls for her sister to wake up. She excitedly counts down to midnight with her eyes closed while Arnav stands frozen across the room, still looking for his phone.
Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five .Four.
Three.
Two.
One.
He spies it on the floor near Khushi just as her count down ends..
Khushi bites down on a jalebi (welcoming the new year with sweetness) and opens her eyes to see Arnav standing in front of her. A smile plays on his lips - he knew what he was doing when he crossed the room to get his phone - while Khushi’s grin fades away as the shock of seeing her Laad Governor in her bedroom at midnight sinks in.
A moment, frozen in time, as they stare at each other. Devi Maiyaa and Fate have conspired to bring them together in the unlikeliest of ways but they both know what this means.
They know, instinctively, they are looking at their future.
Episode ends!!
